BUSINESS Day TV’s new television show, The Growth Engines, on Thursday night presented awards to three business ventures for their innovation.

The show — which has nearly completed its first season — focuses on entrepreneurship, recognised as key to tackling the unemployment problem.

The Growth Engines was presented by Pavlo Phitidis, who is CEO of Aurik Business Incubator.

The "innovation and strategy" award went to GridCars.

It worked with BMW on its i-series, with a focus on emissions-free car technology.

The "innovation and cost" category was won by Qrent and the Discovery Group.

Qrent refurbishes information technology equipment as it is better for a small business to have equipment refurbished to avoid the cost of buying replacement equipment.

The award in the "innovation and value" category went to The Bespoke Amenities Co, in collaboration with the Legacy Hotel Group.

The Bespoke Amenities Co was commended for displaying an innovative spirit by manufacturing its own range of low-cost products, rather than importing them.

These included soaps, shampoos, lotions, robes and slippers.

"By manufacturing in SA, import duties are avoided, local prices are paid for rent, and high productivity enables competitive pricing to be maintained.

"In emergencies, product can be manufactured overnight and delivered immediately," Mr Phitidis said.

The Growth Engines’s first series concludes on Business Day TV, DStv channel 412, on July 7 at 9.30pm, with repeats on Wednesday at 10am and Thursday at 2pm.

Meanwhile, Business Day, in partnership with Business Connexion, has launched a new innovations award.

MyWorld of Tomorrow Innovation awards have nine categories catering specifically for small businesses, along with the corporate and public sectors.

Matthew Blewett, chief investment officer at Business Connexion, said: "Innovation is one of the primary differentiators in a successful business and we want to acknowledge the front-runners in innovation and give exposure to the phenomenal work by individuals, organisations and communities."

To qualify, products and services must have been launched or implemented between July 1 last year and June 30 this year. Entries will close on July 31. The finalists will be announced in September and the awards presentation will take place on October 21 at the Sandton Convention Centre.
