SOUTH Africa’s formal sector added 43,000 jobs in the fourth quarter of last year to 8.992-million employees, Statistics SA’s quarterly employment statistics survey showed on Wednesday.

The trade, business services, and community services sectors all added jobs. These sectors normally add mainly temporary jobs during the busy festive season.

Mining, construction, manufacturing, and transport unsurprisingly shed jobs. Mining and manufacturing companies are cutting back on production due to weak global demand and low commodity prices, and have thus had to retrench workers. The completion of construction projects normally results in job losses.

Employment increased by 6,000 or 0.1% in the fourth quarter of last year compared with the fourth quarter of 2014.

Gross earnings paid to employees increased by 6.3% from R495.6bn in September 2015 to R526.7bn in December 2015. The increase was mainly due to increases in the electricity, construction, manufacturing, trade, business services, transport, community services and mining and quarrying industries.

Average monthly earnings paid to employees increased by 0.7% from R17,392 in August 2015 to R17,517 in November 2015. On an annual basis, average monthly earnings paid to employees increased by 6.7% from R16,424 in November 2014 to R17,517 in November 2015.
