‘Jobs for cash’ report to be made public next month

THE report on the alleged selling of teachers’ posts has been finalised and will be made public next month, the Basic Education Department said on Thursday.
Minister Angie Motshekga would release it after consulting the relevant parties and after briefing Cabinet and parliamentary structures the department was accountable to, the department said in a statement.
The report was expected to be uploaded on the department’s website on April 15.
An investigation was launched following a damning exposé by City Press newspaper in 2014 that implicated the SA Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) in the nationwide selling of teaching posts.
In December, Ms Motshekga released an interim report into the matter, in which Sadtu was identified as the main culprit. At the time, Ms Motshekga said she was aware of the strength of unions and that in some provinces Sadtu appeared to control the government.
Democratic Alliance shadow basic education minister Gavin Davis said they hoped Ms Motshekga would table the report for discussion and deliberation in Parliament.
"Parliament has a crucial role to play in this process because any executive action flowing from the ‘Jobs for Cash’ will need to stand up to parliamentary oversight and scrutiny," he said in a statement.
In its statement, the department said the report would be tabled at a Cabinet meeting on April 13.
On April 14, the department would meet teachers’ unions and school governing bodies to take them through the document and its findings.
