MARTIN Wolf’s criticism of Donald Trump is misguided and shallow. Mr Wolf’s attempt to justify his critique by using the power constraints envisaged by Alexander Hamilton, to associate Mr Trump with Adolf Hitler, is implausible, especially coming from a commentator of Mr Wolf’s eminence.

Mr Trump’s success in wooing the electorate is driven by simple Politics 101 — the electorate wants someone to listen to their real concerns.

US politics has moved in the past 20 years towards the elitism of the political class, which has failed wholesale to effect the necessary changes to protect the middle class from the effects of free trade and migration.

Mr Wolf should rather focus on the critical issues that are besetting the world — mass migration to the West from failed states, the Islamic State, a failing Europe, Brexit, and mass youth unemployment.

What the US needs is not another politico such as Hillary Clinton who will perpetuate the elite, but a businessman who can reset the US economy so it can grow again to the levels that can support global growth.

We want a presidency that can use the power of its office to take back control of international affairs — we want another Reagan, free from the constraints of the political class. Trump is that person.
