BRITISH comedian Eddie Izzard has so far raised a £270‚000 (more than R5m) for Sport Relief from his epic attempt to run 27 marathons in 27 days in SA, in honour of statesman Nelson Mandela.

He sipped a taste of champagne out of a disposable cup — no ice — to celebrate the news.

Mr Izzard is now over the halfway mark‚ embarking on marathon number 16 on Thursday, which is taking him to Prince Albert as he heads towards Robben Island, where Mandela was incarcerated.

His gait is now more of a shuffle than a run‚ but he is doggedly pacing himself to complete the challenge he has set himself.

Sport Relief is a charity that raises money for health‚ education and other initiatives in both the UK and the world’s poorest countries.

The wide open spaces of SA’s hinterland appear to be amazing Mr Izzard‚ who is posting photographs of his observations on his Twitter feed — including a long gravel road cutting through dry bush.

Sharing an image of a lone house in the arid‚ desolate landscape‚ he asked: "Who lives here?"

Mr Izzard began his quest on February 24. The route began with the area where Madiba grew up in the Eastern Cape‚ heading towards the Western Cape, where he was jailed, and eventually ending at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, where Mandela was inaugurated as SA’s first democratically elected president.
