I LOVE Peter Bruce’s idea of investing a sum of money for each child born, to be paid out on their 21st birthday (Thick End of the Wedge, March 4).

In the old days wealthy people used to buy a "pipe of port" when their kids were born, and give them those 720 bottles of (now-matured) port as a gift on their 21st. It makes so much sense, with the power of compounding, to do the same for the kids of SA.

Probably one of the highest return on investment activities our civil service could deliver.
