THE Democratic Alliance (DA) will take advantage of Communications Minister Faith Muthambi being summoned to Parliament to push for an airing by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) of an Emmy-winning documentary about Marikana.

Phumzile van Damme on Tuesday said the party "congratulates Miners Shot Down filmmaker Rehad Desai and his team" for winning the prestigious award.

"All South Africans should be proud of Miners Shot Down‚ including the public broadcaster‚" Ms van Damme said.

The film, directed by Desai and produced by Anita Khanna, won the International Emmy award for best documentary at the gala US television awards ceremony in New York on Monday night. The Emmy is the latest accolade in a slew of awards the film has won at international film festivals.

"It is unacceptable that the public has been denied the opportunity to see this world-class documentary because it tells the story of the Marikana massacre from the perspective of the miners and critical of the African National Congress government’s role in the massacre."

Ms Muthambi and the SABC board are expected to appear before Parliament’s portfolio committee on communications to account for the recent suspension of its CEO‚ Frans Matlala.

When they do‚ Ms van Damme said, the "DA will also raise the issue of Miners Shot Down and push for it to be aired".

"The SABC forgets that its mandate is to broadcast content that is in the public interest‚ and not in the African National Congress’s interest."
