AS PART of the month-long celebrations around International Women’s Day, which was marked on Tuesday, female boxers will entertain fans with fists of fury in an all-female tournament at Durban’s Olive Convention Centre on March 18, Boxing SA chairwoman Muditambi Ravele confirmed on Tuesday.

The tournament is being organised by female promoters Zandile Malinga from Ladysmith and Hardy Mileham. Malinga trades under the banner of Starline Promotions, while Mileham is in charge of Buffalo Promotions in Ballito.

Ravele said: "We will use it to set the ball rolling for the continuation of the first leg of the female seminar that took place in Pretoria in December last year.

"We want to deal with issues that affect female boxers, while paving a smooth environment for those female fighters who will soon join the ranks. Boxing SA also wants to make sure there is now continuity in action for females."

Ravele reiterated their intention of making sure that any promoter who gets funding from the government will include one or two bouts for female fighters in their tournaments.

"By so doing, female boxing will grow, boxers will get publicity and be recognised just like their male counterparts," said Ravele.

"Even with the rise of Tenge (Noni ‘She Bee Stingin’ Tenge, holder of the WBF junior-middleweight belt), outpointing Julie ‘Queen’ Tshabalala over 10 rounds, (and) who became the first female fighter from the African continent to win an IBF title — she beat New Zealander Daniella Smith in Brakpan in June 2006 — female boxing did not get the deserved mileage," said Ravele.
