INDEPENDENT Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) head Robert McBride’s internal disciplinary inquiry has been put on hold by the Labour Court, pending his High Court case against Police Minister Nathi Nhleko.

Mr McBride’s disciplinary hearing was scheduled to begin on Monday. He was suspended on allegations that he covered up for former Hawks head Anwa Dramat and its Gauteng head Robert Shadrack Sibiya, who were accused of the unlawful rendition of Zimbabweans.

Mr McBride has challenged his suspension in the High Court, saying the minister did not have the power under the Constitution to suspend him. The High Court case is expected to be heard in August.

Labour Court judge Annelie Basson ordered that his disciplinary be interdicted until the High Court case was heard. Her judgment would be available at midday, she said.

Meanwhile, the ruling in the disciplinary inquiry in Mr Sibiya’s case is expected on Friday at 11am.
