SUNDAY Times editor Phylicia Oppelt has left the hot seat after just more than two years at the helm of the country’s biggest newspaper and will be succeeded by Bongani Siqoko, of the Daily Dispatch.

Ms Oppelt, according to a Times Media statement released on Tuesday, has "accepted a senior position within the group as general manager, editorial projects".

Mr Siqoko will start on January 11 2016 and Sunday Times deputy editor Sthembiso Msomi will be acting editor with immediate effect.

Brett Horner will be acting editor of Daily Dispatch and a new editor will be "announced in due course".

Times Media MD Andy Gill said: "We are confident that Bongani will succeed in his new position. He has proved an exceptional editor and leader, and will bring a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to his new role, especially as the Sunday Times embarks on a new journey with a fresh design and a new multiplatform future."

Times Media CE Andrew Bonamour said: "We are delighted that Phylicia will remain in the group and help drive the exciting changes we are implementing across titles."
