BUSINESS Day editor Songezo Zibi will be leaving the publication at the end of the February.

Times Media Group said in a release to staff on Thursday that a new editor would be appointed shortly, while Mr Zibi would continue to write columns for Business Day and the Sunday Times.

Mr Zibi replaced Peter Bruce as editor of Business Day in March 2014, becoming the publication’s first black editor. He had previously spent 11 months as an associate editor at Business Day’s sister publication, Financial Mail.

When Mr Zibi assumed leadership of the publication, it had already been facing years of declining circulation within SA’s print media industry.

Prior to his appointment, he had most recently spent four years as a corporate affairs executive at Xstrata SA, now known as Glencore, and had served on the executive committee of the National Business Initiative.

Mr Zibi had previously spent eight years in corporate communication at Volkswagen SA.

During his tenure, Mr Zibi was a regular commentator on political issues, and in the same year he assumed editorship of Business Day, he wrote his first book — Raising the Bar: Hope and Renewal in SA.

"We are sad to lose Songezo on a day-to-day basis, but are delighted he will still be writing columns for the group. We wish him well in his future plans," Times Media MD Andrew Gill said in a note to staff.

Mr Zibi said in a message to his colleagues that his position of leadership had been an honour for him, and he expressed best wishes to his future replacement.

"I particularly thank my colleagues in the newsroom whose dedication and counsel enabled us to produce a newspaper and website we could all be proud of," the message read.
