UNFOUNDED fears of a return to an apartheid-type state may be behind the recent use of force by the ruling African National Congress in Parliament, according to University of the Witwatersrand vice-chancellor Adam Habib.

Speaking at a Society, Work and Development Institute seminar on violence in democracy Prof Habib said this fear may have been the reason for the presence of police in Parliament at President Jacob Zuma’s state of the nation address.

The forceful expulsion of Economic Freedom Fighters before the state of the nation address on February 12 was the first time such extreme measures to ensure order in the house had been taken since the transition to democracy in 1994.
