EUROPEAN and North American visitor numbers to SA spiked in December, reflecting the effect of a weak rand.

This can also be put down to seasonal year-end travel.

The number of visitors to the country rose in December, despite concern from the industry that SA’s new visa regime would harm its festive season prospects.

The favourable exchange rate makes SA a good value-for-money holiday destination.

Tourism Business Council of SA CEO Mmatšatši Ramawela said the last quarter of the year was usually characterised by a slight spike in foreign traveller receipts, as well as South Africans taking time off.

Foreign arrivals rose to 1.5-million in December from 1.3-million in November, Statistics SA data showed on Wednesday.

Based on the interministerial committee on tourism’s input, the state has relaxed some of the requirements of the new visa regime.
