ANKARA — An unidentified warplane crashed in northwestern Syria near the border with Turkey, Turkish media reported on Tuesday.

Turkey’s military shot down the aircraft after it violated the country’s airspace, AHaber television reported.

The pilots had ejected and parachuted to safety, it said.

Russian and Syrian warplanes have been active in the area, reinforcing forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad against Turkmen fighters.

Turkish military rules of engagement would apply to any plane that enters its airspace without permission and Russia should act carefully, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said in early October, after Russia said its jets mistakenly violated Turkish airspace at the time.

The nationality of the plane was not immediately clear.

Video footage broadcast by Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency showed the jet bursting in flames and descending rapidly before crashing behind a mountain.

Turkey has warned Russia against air strikes that have targeted ethnic Turkmen rebels in the area.
