PAKISTANI reaction to the Oscar-winning documentary by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is typical of a patriarchical society that has scant respect for women. Honour killings of women who marry out of the clan or courting couples are the product of male wrath, aided and abetted by courts that hardly mete out punishments for the harassment of women.

The twice-acclaimed Obaid, who highlighted acid attack abuse in her earlier documentary, should be feted by women globally for focusing on the abuses women face, not only in Pakistan, but in many other countries (SA and India included) where rape has reached high levels.

Severe penalties, including death in severe cases, should be the ultimate "desert" for such miscreants.
