RHODES University will immediately increase capacity at its harassment office to deal with cases of sexual violence and rape‚ vice-chancellor Sizwe Mabizela said at a press conference on Friday.

Dr Mabizela was addressing the media following dramatic protests at the Grahamstown campus this week, against what students have called a culture of rape.

University management has agreed with most of the students’ demands raised during the protests.

"One rape is one too many‚" Dr Mabizela said‚ adding that the university must debunk the "stranger-danger" myth.

A task team has been set up to review all policies and protocols regarding sexual violence and rape at Rhodes University.

"We are in full solidarity with any student who has been a victim of sexual violence or rape… we will never protect rapists at our university‚" Dr Mabizela said.

The university’s academic programme will resume on Monday after all academic activities were suspended this week.
