PROPAGANDA, the Goebbels type, has ruled SA now for eight decades — 58 years under the Nats and the balance under the current regime.

It was understandable that the apartheid government would propagandise its segregation policy, thus using the medium to full effect.

That a democratically elected government, once so critical of the state organ, should emulate His Master’s Voice is one of the new dispensation’s greatest tragedies.

Nine CEOs later, the broadcaster has suffered probably it’s first open mutiny with the resignation of the acting CEO, Jimi Matthews, and several journalists. The honest declaration by Matthews that he "no longer wants to be complicit in decisions that he is not proud of", was an event waiting to happen.

SABC chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng, chiefly fingered in the exodus, must take blame for creating that climate of fear, precipitated by the blanket ban on reportage and visuals of riot incidents.

This exodus will be our very own Brexit (broadcaster exit), and a probable harbinger of more exits from the green and gold party.
