THE National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has concluded a three-year wage agreement with Samancor Chrome, covering the company’s operations in the Rustenburg area, the union said on Thursday.

Entry-level employees will receive a 14% increase from July 1, with employees in other categories receiving between 13% and 10%, the union said in a statement.

The second and third years of the agreement will see 10% wage increases.

"The NUM would like to take this opportunity to thank all … members who were with us throughout these negotiations until they gave us the mandate to sign this agreement," said NUM chief negotiator at Samancor Ecliff Tantsi.

Samancor Chrome is the world’s second-largest producer of ferrochrome, producing in excess of 1-million tonnes of chrome ore annually.

Ferrochrome is primarily used in the manufacturing of steel alloys.
