DANNY Jordaan has picked up where his predecessor left off‚ the Democratic Alliance’s (DA’s) Athol Trollip said on Friday.

In his review of Mr Jordaan’s first 100 days as mayor‚ Mr Trollip said he has "disserved the people of Nelson Mandela Bay‚ in the style of all African National Congress mayors before him".

During this period‚ he said‚ Mr Jordaan has deflected "scandal after scandal‚ rather than serving the desperate needs of our people".

His tenure so far‚ "has been tainted" by the alleged $10m Fifa World Cup bribe paid to the Caribbean Football Union to secure votes for SA to host the 2010 tournament — Mr Jordaan led the bid committee.

Other scandals included the "revelation that his residential electricity bill went unpaid for seven years" and "the admission that he unethically handed out wads of cash to voters‚ and the undeniable truth that he is a part-time mayor".

Mr Jordaan has remained in his position as president of the South African Football Association.

"Promises made in Jordaan’s first 100 days have been broken‚ and people in the Metro are further from jobs‚ further from housing‚ further from reliable public transport‚ further from decent sanitation and further from safety and security on our streets‚" said Mr Trollip.

To illustrate the last point‚ Mr Trollip quoted Statistics SA as saying more than "80% of residents in Nelson Mandela Bay are afraid to go out after dark — the highest in any Metro".

"Yet Jordaan has failed to get a metro police service up and running‚ while continuing to pay its chief of metro police for zero outcomes‚" said Mr Trollip‚ who also said that the latter "draws a R1m annual salary with not a single metro cop on the beat".

Mr Trollip also raised the imminent axing of Mpilo Mbambisa‚ "with a generous golden handshake like three other municipal managers before him".

"The story of Danny Jordaan’s broken promises and scandal evasion doesn’t need to be the story of the future of Nelson Mandela Bay‚" concluded Mr Trollip.

"The DA is set on winning Nelson Mandela Bay in next year’s election and will make our first 100 days a historic period of growth‚ development and change."

The party will launch its "complete vision" for the Bay on September 12 at Port Elizabeth’s iconic Donkin Reserve.
