Restructuring invariably happens when companies review their operations. This keeps them efficient and profitable. Tunnel-visioned Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu is leading the government charge on threatening Amplats (Anglo American Platinum). I suppose it’s no use mentioning that if state-owned enterprises did the same they wouldn’t need huge bail-outs from the taxpayer. The alternative is to go the Eskom route and merely implement big annual increases. Government monopolies are good at this.
A simple review of the poor mining environment would lead a semi-intelligent person to arrive at the government and unions being major culprits: who is to blame for inflexible labour laws, low productivity, violent strikes, threats of nationalisation, abnormal energy price increases and poor service delivery in mining areas?
The only way the government can help create jobs is to improve the environment for businesses to grow.
