IT IS indeed sad that a person of the stature of Adv Jeremy Gauntlett — considered to be one of the best legal brains in the country — is not appointed to the Western Cape High Court.

I am not qualified in legal matters but I do know that we need the best expertise we can find for our courts.

We need "champions" who will do their work without fear or favour, with a clear focus on being objective, regardless of who they are dealing with.

Mr Gauntlett comes with excellent credentials and should be given the opportunity to prove that he can be one of those champions.

Let us hope fairness prevails and he is appointed to the Constitutional Court.
