MIDVAAL Local Municipality mayor Bongani Baloyi said on Wednesday the DA was able to retain the town because residents believe in the party’s plan.

Presenting his inaugural speech in Meyerton‚ Baloyi said the party had proven in the past five years that it would deliver basic services to the community of Midvaal.

Baloyi said that in the first term there was pressure on his administration to perform as it was the first Gauteng municipality run by the DA.

Under Baloyi’s administration‚ Midvaal received clean audits and support for the DA increased from 55% in 2011 to 60% in 2016.

"The increase in support shows that people have agreed that our plan is working.... We will respect the confidence they have shown in us‚" Baloyi said.

Following the local government elections in August‚ the DA now leads four municipalities in Gauteng: Tshwane; Johannesburg; Midvaal; and Mogale City.

Baloyi committed his administration to the following:

• "To remain an honest‚ open‚ transparent and responsive government;

• "To ensure the safety of communities;

• "To be a youth-biased municipality;

• "To fight attempts to amalgamate Midvaal with other municipalities;

• "To deliver high-quality services; and

• "To grow the economy."
