AFRICAN National Congress (ANC) members and supporters on Friday marched against racism, walking to the Union Buildings from Burgers Park in Pretoria.

Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane and Sport and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula rallied the crowd with slogans. "Down with racism, down," they shouted from the back of a pick-up truck.

Ms Mokonyane also took a swipe at blue-light vehicles, asking them to move away as the march started. "Go away from our march. Blue lights must fall," she said.

ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe, deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte and Health Minister Aaron Motstoaledi walked behind them.

Ms Mokonyane said they expected the crowd to swell to 75,000.

The march got off to a slow start as the organisers struggled to communicate to ANC members that it had started. At the Union Buildings, Mr Mantashe would hand over a memorandum of demands to President Jacob Zuma.

The colours black, green and yellow dominated at the park. Supporters wore ANC shirts emblazoned with the words "unity nonracialism and democracy" on the back.

"We are fighting for this land. This is the land of our ancestors," they sang.
