A REGIONAL African National Congress (ANC) officer bearer told BDlive on Thursday that the killing of a party volunteer at a voting station in Lindelani, KwaZulu-Natal, on election night had been reported to the police.

The ANC volunteer was shot dead at a voting station in the area after the station closed to voters on Wednesday, the South African Police Service confirmed.

Capt Thulani Zwane said that a case of murder was being investigated.

Capt Zwane said there appeared to be no motive for the 30-year-old woman’s killing, which took place at 9.30pm on Wednesday at Lindelani. She was shot by unidentified people.

KwaZulu-Natal has battled with political violence since before democracy.

ANC regional secretary in KwaDukuza Moses Thole said the volunteer was at an information desk in the voting station waiting for election results to begin trickling in with other members and volunteers. Witnesses had given the police and the ANC information.

"The first we did when we got the news was we called the police. When we went to the scene the police were already there. Witnesses made statements and our comrades who saw what happened also helped police make a report when statements were taken," Mr Thole said.

ANC KwaZulu-Natal spokesman Senzo Mkhize said the ANC would also look into further claims that another volunteer was killed in Glebelands Hostel at Umlazi, Durban.

Mr Thole would not speculate on the causes or motives of the killing in KwaDukuza. He said the ANC regionally, provincially and nationally extended their condolences to the family of the deceased volunteer.
