ATTERIDGEVILLE became a sea of red when the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party took its final election campaign thrust to the Pretoria township on Sunday with thousands of supporters in attendance at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

In a bold move EFF leader Julius Malema held his Tshela Thupa (Crack The Whip) Rally on the same day as the African National Congress (ANC) held its Siyanqoba Rally at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

Lucas Moripe Stadium is also the venue where the ANC lauched its Gauteng provincial manifesto earlier this year.

According to a survey conducted by Sunday Times newspaper, the EFF is expected to amass the third highest number of votes at the May 7 polls with 5%, while ANC and the Democratic Alliance get just over 63% and over 23% respectively.

Upbeat supporters, mostly youth in red t-shirts and baret hats, flocked to the stadium on Sunday morning.

As supporters prepared for the rally to begin, entertainers led the growing crowd of supporters in anti-Jacob Zuma songs, including uZuma Uyathakatha (Zuma practices witchcraft).

Much of the crowd wore red EFF t-shirts while others took their support a step further and carried makeshift caskets bearing the image of President Jacob Zuma or the ANC's trademark colours — yellow, green and black.

One supporter said he was confident that the EFF would at least create a significant dent in ANC support at the May 7 elections.
