FORMER head of the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) Lumko Mtimde looks set to be appointed to serve on the council of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa).

Parliament’s communications portfolio committee has announced that Mr Mtimde, along with six others, has been recommended to fill in the vacancies at the council of the regulator.

The other candidates are Botlenyana Mokhele, Dimakatso Qocha, Yengwayo Kutta, Peter Zimri, Keabetswe Modimoeng and Paris Mashile.

Mr Mtimde was recently appointed chief of staff in Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Senzeni Zokwana’s office. He is a senior African National Congress member and former board member of the South African Broadcasting Corporation. He stepped down from his position as MDDA CEO last year after eight years at the helm.

Mr Mtimde has courted controversy because of his support for the establishment of a media appeals tribunal.

Communications portfolio committee chairwoman Joyce Moloi-Moropa said on Tuesday that the names of the recommended candidates for positions at the Icasa council still need to be adopted by the National Assembly before they can be forwarded to the minister of communications for appointment.

Ms Moloi-Moropa said she had confidence in the recruitment process and the committee was diligent in ensuring that suitable candidates with requisite qualifications, skills and experience were recommended for the positions.

"The candidates demonstrated a high level of knowledge, skill and experience with regards to the regulatory mandate of Icasa," said Ms Moloi-Moropa.
