CLINICS and hospitals across the country are supporting the World Health Organisation (WHO) Save Lives: Clean Your Hands campaign on World Hand Hygiene Day, on May 5.

Disinfecting hands is basic protocol for staff at hospitals to help prevent germs and viruses from spreading. With the spotlight on antibiotic-resistant superbugs , the WHO has warned that unless something drastic is done, many antibiotics could become redundant this century, leaving patients vulnerable to deadly infections, particularly during operations.

The Department of Health, the Federation of Infectious Diseases Societies of SA and the South African Antibiotic Stewardship Programme are also supporting the Save Lives campaign, and hand-washing rallies are taking place hospitals around the country.
