NO incidents of violence were reported overnight on Tuesday at the University of the Free State (UFS), while the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) moved on Wednesday to re-open its embattled Soshunguve campus.

UFS may reopen on Thursday after clashes between students and some of their parents, with a university spokeswoman saying on Wednesday the institution expected to release a statement later in the day.

UFS vice-chancellor Jonathan Jansen said on Tuesday the institution would collect evidence and act against incidences of criminality, while it would continue to pursue transformation and inclusivity.

TUT could not immediately be reached for comment on Wednesday. However, the university’s Soshunguve campus was expected to reopen with numerous restrictions against students. The institution closed on Tuesday morning following renewed protests that disrupted the campus, with the institution bolstering security, closing most entrances to its Soshunguve campus and barring any mass meetings.

TUT said on Tuesday it expected to resume normal operations on Thursday, while the University of Pretoria remained closed on Wednesday. The institution said in a message to staff and students it was currently analysing footage of clashes that took place on Monday, and would be pursuing any necessary disciplinary and criminal action.
