SPORTS Minister Fikile Mbalula has refused to comment on the Gupta issue, saying: "I owe nobody an explanation."
Mr Mbalula called a media conference to address the Fifa match-fixing and World Cup bribery scandals.
The clearly annoyed minister shut down questions about whether he had heard about his appointment from the Gupta family, saying "We are not governed by Guptas. We are not run by Guptas. We are not here to talk about Guptas."
He said: "I am not going to join the chorus if I don’t know the conductor. I do not dance to music I did not compose.
"I am Fikile Mbalula‚ appointed by Jacob Zuma and seconded by the ANC (African National Congress)‚" he said‚ adding if he wanted to address "aspersions" he would do so "substantively".
