THE Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF’s) Dali Mpofu will represent Gareth Cliff in his R25m claim against M-Net, which fired him because he failed to show "empathy" when he tweeted that former estate agent Penny Sparrow had the right to say what she wanted.

Lawyer Eric Mabuza told Radio 702 that Mr Mpofu had been appointed as the lead attorney in the case.

Ms Sparrow tweeted that black people on Durban beaches were like "monkeys".

Mr Cliff subsequently dissociated himself from Ms Sparrow and apologised for his tweet.

M-Net fired him nonetheless‚ saying he was not a racist but should have demonstrated greater empathy.

Mr Mpofu, who left the African National Congress to join the Economic Freedom Fighters in November 2013, represented mineworkers and their relatives at the commission of inquiry into the August 2012 Marikana shooting.

He has also been at the forefront of a campaign to transform the Johannesburg bar. He is vice-chairman of the Johannesburg Bar Council.
