Yield to lure of independence
HARLEY-Davidson is a brand synonymous with so much more than just two wheels. It symbolises independence, that freedom of the open road where you imagine cruising along Route 66 in the US or the Garden Route in South Africa.
It is typically American in guaranteeing an inalienable right to freedom and by all accounts allowing the rider to declare their independence.
This week Harley-Davidson South Africa is launching the 2013 model range as it enters its 110th model year. It has come a long way from that 116cc motorcycle it first produced back in 1903, which was really little more than a powered bicycle.
In 1909 it launched its first V-Twin engine bike that has become iconic for the brand, and while many may perceive it has a niche motorcycle manufacturer, in 1920 it was the largest motorbike company in the US and no one can argue its global popularity in the market today.
The local operation is now also introducing a number of new services that will further bolster the appeal of these legendary bikes and are available until the end of next month.
The first is Harley-Davidson Protect, a one-year, fully comprehensive insurance policy that is free with any 2012-13 Big Twin model with the exception of certain models.
The fully comprehensive standard policy naturally includes coverage for accident, fire and theft, but also provides full roadside assistance for a number of eventualities. In addition, owners have the option of adding a product called Tyres 4 Life. This carries a nominal cost of R1,188 a year, equivalent to just R99 a month, which given the cost of tyres, is actually quite a good investment.
You can also upgrade your standard policy to a Chrome policy by simply paying in the difference.
Insuring your precious bike is a necessity, but there are also many ways to acquire your dream Harley-Davidson, and the local dealerships are now providing a unique finance package. Called Harley Freedom Services, the new package provides multiple repayment options designed to suit you and to get you onto the road as soon as possible.
As any Harley owner will tell you though, the bike is only part of the package. It is all about the lifestyle and through the Harley Freedom Services finance package you can also finance up to R20,000 worth of that all-important riding gear.
In addition, finance is available for an unlimited value on a wide range of parts and accessories, ensuring you can have exactly the bike you want and the image to go with it.
Terms and conditions apply of course, and the offer excludes Sportsters, Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) bikes, police bikes and demo models.
This leaves the rest of the range available for you to choose from and today the range of Harley-Davidson’s available is bigger than ever.
The latest models include the new Hard Candy range ,which was only recently launched, as well as the new 110th Anniversary Editions which are set to be highly sought after by Harley fans and collectors the world over thanks to their unique specification and serial number.
For next year, the iconic Harley-Davidson Street Bob has received a makeover with new blacked out triple clamps and powertrain and a chopped rear fender with side mounted licence plate holder.
The Softail bikes have also received attention for next year, while the legendary Fat Boy now features mirror chrome aluminium bullet hole disc wheels as part of its standard equipment.
Even the touring models have been upgraded with the new equipment, as well as new colour and graphics options on the Street Glide, Electra Glide Ultra and Road King Anniversary Edition.
As more Harley dealerships open around the country, the popularity of not just the bikes but the whole lifestyle surrounding them is increasing.
So if you are yearning to be granted the true freedom of the open road, then there may be no better time to head to your nearest Harley-Davidson dealership and get the full low down on the new 2013 model range and the special offers that are available.
