Great Wall Motors (GWM) this week launched a brand new compact model — the C10 1.5 hatchback with variable valve timing (VVT) It is mainly intended for city dwellers though with a bit of gear changing it will also do for inter-city commuting.

At first sight, the first thing that strikes you is the deep V-shaped grille. It’s something you will either love or hate.

The four-cylinder makes 77kW at 6,000rpm, producing 138Nm of torque at 4,200rpm. I must admit I have driven perkier 1.5litre cars.

Priced at  R134,990 it is well specced.

Two airbags, ABS with electronic brake distribution (EBD) are standard with electric windows, aircon,  a radio/CD/MP3 audio system with auxiliary and USB inputs plus satellite audio controls on the steering wheel are all standard, as are 15inch alloy wheels, with the spare being a space-saver. I am told that a standard steel wheel will fit in the well, but you will have to fork out extra if you want one.

Being a hatchback, the boot is fairly small but the back seats slide forward for some extra space and are split 60-40 and fold flat. Just leave the kids at home.

Electric power steering, central locking, seatbelt unbuckling alarm, opening door alert, low fuel warning, rear children door lock, immobiliser and reversing radar are all standard.  A rear windshield defogger and front and rear fog lamps aid visibility.

GWM’s standard three-year/100,000 km warranty, two-year 24-hour Roadside Assist service as well as 71 dealerships across South Africa offer owners additional backup and support.

The price includes VAT and emissions tax.
