THE Nelson Mandela Foundation has released a Nelson Mandela Quotations app, so the words of former president Nelson Mandela can be at your fingertips.

The app comes in two versions, a free "lite" version and a $4.99 premium version. The quotes come from the book Nelson Mandela by Himself: The Authorised Book of Quotations, published in 2011 by the foundation’s CEO Sello Hatang and senior researcher Sahm Venter.

Mandela was president of SA from 1994-1999, having been released in 1990 after 27 years of imprisonment under the apartheid government. He died in 2013.

Nelson Mandela Foundation spokesman Neeran Naidoo said the app used the more than 3,000 quotes published in the book. The premium version gives subscribers access to a database of quotes, and sends a quote of the day, while the "lite" version sends a quote of the day. "Everything is online these days.... You can search categories and themes and share with your friends," said Naidoo.

Both versions are available in Android and IOS platforms.

"The app ensures that Nelson Mandela’s words will be documented for generations to come. I hope that the quotes continue to serve as an inspiration," Naidoo said.

The quotes are drawn from official papers, Mandela’s diaries and impromptu remarks he made over a period of 63 years.

• The Nelson Mandela Foundation is running a competition: One person who downloads the "lite" version of app and then selects a quote and shares it on Twitter will receive a free premium version.
