JOHANNESBURG’S iconic Market Theatre has chosen Lorraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun to mark February’s designation as Black History Month.

Black History Month is an annual observance in the US, Canada and the UK for remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African diaspora, according to Wikipedia. It is celebrated annually in February in the US and Canada, and in October in the UK.

This month’s staging of A Raisin in the Sun will mark the 1959 play’s Johannesburg debut. It was first staged on Broadway in New York. The play tracks the attempts of a black Chicago family to improve themselves, and explores the fears of the eldest son, Walter Lee Younger, that life will not improve and he will not have the things for which he yearns.

The staging at the Market Theatre marks the fourth collaboration between the theatre and the US Embassy in SA.

Market Theatre artistic director James Ngcobo has committed to staging a diverse line up for this, the theatre’s 40th year of existence. He chose A Raisin in the Sun because of its parallels with the lives of many South Africans. The cast is mostly South African, with one American actress who lives in SA.

* A Raisin in the Sun runs from Feb 5-28. For block bookings contact Anthony Ezeoke on 011-832-1641 ext 121.
