THE festive season gets started with music, comedy, fashion, fun and car shows at the inaugural Black Entertainment Television (BET) Experience Africa.

BET is a US Festival concept, combining a variety of shows and activities that are held at the same place at the same time.

The event will be held at the Ticket Pro Dome in Northgate, on December 12.

Alex Okosi, the local MD of Viacom Entertainment in Africa, says: "We chose SA because of its great locations, and Johannesburg in particular, because of its infrastructure."

The entertainment line-up includes American singer and songwriter Mary J Blige who replaces Tamar Braxton after her last-minute cancellation due to ill health.

Festival-goers will be given a chance to experience BET’s series of Genius Talks, with Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula confirmed for the event.

"We looked for the best of the best in the country," says Mr Okosi. "They had to meet BET’s standards."

The comedy line-up will be presented by veteran comedian David Kau. It will feature comedians such as Skhumba, John Vlismas, Joey Rasdien, Tats Nkonzo, Celeste Ntuli, Jason Goliath and Kenyan funnyman Churchill.

Mary J Blige, Maxwell, Raphael Saadiq, and Young Thug will share the stage with African superstars AKA, Flavour and Diamond Platinumz.

David Tlale, a local fashion designer, will be joined on the catwalk by Martelle Ludek, Thebe Magugu and Nthabiseng Molefe. They join designers NN Vintage (Mafikizolo lead vocalist Nhlanhla Nciza’s new label), Loin Cloth & Ashes, Tuelo Nguyuza Collectiv, KL Tsotetsi and Rich Mnisi.
