SINGER-composer Nono Nkoane is the headline attraction for this year’s final Soweto Art & Craft Fair.

Started three years ago by a group of entrepreneurial students the fair has grown from a small affair with 17 exhibitors to one in which the work of almost 70 artists and groups is on display.

In the second year music promoters Concerts SA and Jozi Unsigned started sponsoring the live music that draws crowds to the fair. The fair is held at the Soweto Theatre in Jabulani.

"It’s grown in leaps and bounds," says Jozi Unsigned music promoter Christine Msibi. "The audience is always very open to what we throw at them. Fans come through to see an artist and then stay."

Simphiwe Twala is one of the three remaining full-time fair organisers. There were eight at the start, but running the fair has become a full-time job. The fair takes place once a month, with this month’s showcase taking place on Saturday. It will be a "best of 2015", says Msibi.

"We have become a hub for almost 70 artists and crafters," says Twala. The fair showcases fashion, design, art and craft. A spin-off — the Seven Colour Sundays fair — has also developed. Seven Colour Sundays is a food and beverage fair offering everything from gourmet burgers and cocktails to pap and wors.
