AGRICULTURE, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Senzeni Zokwana met domestic meat associations on Thursday to brief stakeholders on the agreements reached with the US on the import of poultry, beef and pork into SA.

The decisions on the imports are in exchange for South African agricultural products continuing to benefit from tariff-free access to the US market under the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa).

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Red Meat Industry Forum, the National Emergent Red Meat Producers’ Organisation, South African Pork Producers’ Organisation, South African Poultry Association, African Farmers Association of SA (Afasa), Agri SA and Association of Meat Importers and Exporters.

According to ministerial spokesman Bomikazi Molapo the participants agreed that it was important to meet the March 15 deadline set by President Barack Obama for the implementation of the agreements reached.

Mr Zokwana committed to intensify government efforts to expand international market access to South African agricultural commodities.
