Citi Group South Africa has appointed former Business Unity South Africa CEO Jerry Vilakazi as an adviser to the company.

Citi said on Tuesday that Mr Vilakazi would provide insights on a wide range of macroeconomic and commercial issues, and provide advice to the firm on its business and positioning in South Africa.

"South Africa is a key part of Citi's emerging market strategy and Mr Vilakazi's appointment demonstrates Citi's commitment to the region," the group said.

Mr Vilakazi resigned from Busa in February last year to pursue other interests, and currently holds the position of nonexecutive chairman at Netcare and at the Palama Group, which he cofounded.

Donna Oosthuyse, MD and chief country officer for Citi South Africa, welcomed Mr Vilakazi's appointment.

"South Africa is strategically important for Citi, as a highly sophisticated market with a large number of diverse and well-known companies, state-owned enterprises and financial institutions," she said.
