SOUTH African retailer Shoprite Holdings on Monday said it increased its turnover for the year to June 2012 by 14,4% to about R82,7bn, compared with the previous 12 months. Growth on a like-for-like basis was 8,5%.

Shoprite Holdings is Africa's largest food retailer.

During the 2012 reporting period, internal food inflation averaged 4,9%, from -0.1% in the previous period. Turnover growth increased in the second half of the year to 15,6% from 13,2% in the first half.

The group's core South African supermarket division increased sales 12,9%.

The turnover of the 131 supermarkets the group operates outside South Africa increased 25,4% from the previous reporting period.

In a relatively low inflationary environment, the furniture division grew its turnover 11,1%.

Shoprite's results for the review period are expected to be released around August 21.
