GREAT Wall Motors (GWM) has added a new turbo diesel engine to the Steed 5 double cab to ensure that it competes squarely with the more established brands in this hotly contested market.
Among many other Chinese bakkie offerings in this range, the model seems to offer slightly higher levels of quality than many of its compatriots.
The engine, similar to that fitted to the H5, is said to be greener, quieter and more efficient, meeting Euro 4 emission levels. It features dual overhead camshafts, high-pressure common rail, a variable geometry turbocharger (VGT), NVH noise control, an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system and an automatic valve clearance compensator.
Looking at the numbers, the 4D20 turbo has 110kW at 4000r/min, and 310Nm between 1800 to 2800r/min via a six-speed manual transmission.
The development of the 4D20 turbo diesel engine is said to be further proof of GWM's commitment to innovation. In 2010, it was the only diesel engine to be selected as one of China's Top 10 Engines in the Chinese Hearts Awards, which recognise advancements in technology.
The Steed 5 2.0VGT Double Cab features front and rear mud flaps, 16-inch alloy wheels, while the insulated load bin is protected for heavy loads. It also features front fog lights, remote central locking, leather seats, power steering, electric windows and side mirrors, a CD/MP3 player with steering mounted audio controls. Safety, meanwhile, comes in the form of dual front airbags, and ABS with EBD.
The GWM Steed 5 2.0VGT is available from R224990 for the 4X2 and R242990 for the 4X4. A three-year/100000km warranty and two-year 24-hour roadside assist service are also standard.
With a brand new diesel engine and a wide array of features, the competitively priced Steed 5 2.0VGT promises exceptional value for money and a powerful driving experience.
